We bring our commercial design and manufacturing experience to DoD programs, while maintaining awareness of the special needs of the defense industry. Instead of treating DoD programs as “just another government contract,” we pay close attention to customer needs, just as we would for any commercial client. A big advantage: COTS is not just a buzzword for us; We have an extensive commercial portfolio, allowing us to design military systems with genuine COTS cost savings.
Focused on requirements
“Good enough for government work” is not good enough for us. At Radio Design Group, our mission is to ensure that whatever system we create meets the requirements of the mission, both initially and long term. This involves getting the specifications right, including understanding inevitable performance tradeoffs, reducing ongoing engineering changes due to “feature creep,” and providing value engineering, to reduce manufacturing and sustainment costs.
Comprehensive lifetime program support
Requirements rarely end with simple development programs. Once the system is designed and prototyped, Radio Design Group provides ongoing support as well. This includes complete manufacturing, automated testing to ensure 100% system performance, and complete RMA repair services for the life of the program. In addition, we provide obsolescence mitigation engineering, to extend program life well beyond the typical commercial product lifetime, a need that is vital to long-term DoD systems in a rapidly changing wireless world.

Repair & Support
RF and wireless systems are among the most complex developments undertaken. Unlike many digital applications, “off the shelf” systems are not readily available for the majority of radio-related systems, especially those in the military arena. We offer comprehensive program support that includes development, sustainment, and obsolescence mitigation, extending the life of a product by resolving parts obsolescence issues, upgrading performance to meet new requirements, such as modernized interfaces, or maintaining legacy equipment no longer supported by the manufacturer.

Radio Frequency Distribution Unit (RFDU)
The RFDU-300 is a multipurpose RF distribution unit designed to interface between various platform antennas and receiving systems. Building on the foundation of its proven predecessors, the RFDU-300 provides the functions of commutation, test switching, test noise generation, RF notch filtering and RF matrix switching in a compact, reliable package.
The RFDU-300 is notable for its advanced filter design. In DSP-based receiver systems, overload caused by signals higher than the dynamic range of the system causes overload or an increase in the apparent noise floor. Our proprietary band-reject filters provide a digitally controlled notch over multi-octave ranges that solves this problem. Frequencies range from a low of 10 kHz all the way up to 18 GHz. A big advantage is our ability to reject frequencies over a wide range without affecting the remaining bandpass, a feature unique to our systems.
Medusa Multi-Port RF Test System
The testing of complex multi-port RF systems can be challenging. So we developed a custom test system, “Medusa,” which solves those issues with a flexible, expandable architecture. Typically used to test our RF Distribution Units (RFDUs), Medusa is a fully developed system which provides test switching under computer control for systems operating up to 18 GHz can be customized to the required use with software.
Ruggedized Communication Systems
We offer customized equipment design and manufacturing for specialized communications systems, including alerting systems for difficult environments, and both portable and fixed equipment for defense applications.
